Kappa member keeps charity strong in Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 30, 2009) - You won’t find Kappa Chapter member Sam Nicaise whiling away his time between classes at the University of Kentucky. Many college undergrads focus on academics and devote any remaining free time to television, texting and facebook. Sam however, is an exception to this status quo. This past spring semester, Sam dedicated over 234 hours of community service to local charities. In June, he led a team of 13 students from the University of Kentucky’s Engineering Department to plan and build Gato Del Sol III, a solar powered car for the annual Formula Sun Grand Prix at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, Texas.

Despite Sam’s enthusiasm for extracurricular activities, he refuses to allow academics to become second in his college career. Sam is a Goldwater Scholar, an award of free tuition under the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education program. The award is presented nationally to only 300 sophomores and juniors annually in the fields of science, mathematics and engineering. Each university is allowed only four nominations making the honor one of the most prestigious in the United States.

A strong believer in the virtues of charity, Sam can be found at the Lexington Northside Public Library once a week. He’s not there to study. Instead, Sam donates the remainder of his free time to the public school tutoring program where he assists children in their school subjects.

Sam’s exemplary character is an inspiration to the Kappa Chapter and has instilled pride within our fraternity at home, and abroad.

Phi Kappa Tau Rush begins August 24th through 28th. Join us and meet the men who compose our distinct brotherhood. If you want a chance to make an immediate impact in a fraternity and on campus, then Phi Kappa Tau is for you. We have people in leadership positions in all facets of community organizations across campus. Our estimable brotherhood includes gentlemen who are active in Interfraternity Council, Student Government, UKCCO and several others. We recently have procured multiple awards including the Dean's Cup and the highest honor for our fraternity, the Maxwell award. We go above and beyond the standards for fraternities. As brothers, we continually refine ourselves by achieving the highest grades in school, retaining the most community service hours per man on campus, raising the most money for our philanthropy in the nation, and sustain one of the strongest brotherhoods in the world. We look forward to the possibility of calling you, brother.

Phi Kappa Tau was founded in the Union Literary Society Hall of Miami University's Old Main Building in Oxford, Ohio on March 17, 1906. The four honored founders were:

Taylor Albert Borradaile
Clinton Dewitt Boyd
Dwight Ireneus Douglass
William Henry Shideler.

Founded as the Non-Fraternity Association to give Miami's non-fraternity men a voice in campus political affairs, the organization changed its name to Phrenecon on March 6, 1909 because the name Non-Fraternity Association seemed too negative.

Phrenecon became national in 1911 when a second chapter was formed at Ohio University. Additional Phrenecon chapters were established at Ohio State University, Centre College (Danville, KY), Mount Union College (Alliance, OH) and the University of Illinois. At Miami, Phrenecon began to have difficuly retaining members by the early 'teens. Often, men joined Phrenecon, then later dropped their membership and joined Greek-letter fraternities. In fact, the Miami chapters of Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon were founded by Phrenecon members. For that reason, the Miami Chapter of Phrenecon withdrew from the National Phrenecon and adopted the name Phi Kappa Tau on March 9, 1916. The rest of the chapters agreed to the name change in December of that year and invited Miami to return to the national organization as the Alpha chapter of Phi Kappa Tau.

Our Chapter House

Our fraternity house was donated to the Kappa chapter by John T. Muncey in 1992. The house is modeled from the Hotel de Beauvais in France and contains living spaces for eight. In the early 2000's, the house was updated with wireless technologies. Recently, the house has again been renovated with rooms rendered in our heritage colors, olde gold and Harvard red. Phi Kappa Tau's house is considered one of the most unique on UK's campus.

The Kappa chapter of Phi Kappa Tau at the University of Kentucky has in recent history become one of the most respected chapters in fraternity history. In 2008, the Kappa chapter won the esteemed Maxwell Award, the highest honor of our fraternity and in 2008, our chapter was honored by the University of Kentucky for highest cumulative G.P.A.
